Secondaries will kill ships while you are reloading with fire and shell damage. Get the captain's skills for the level 1 and 4 secondary boosts and see what boosts there are in the modules. This is the number 1 piece of advice everyone gives in the N Carolina. Just get in the habit of not engaging ships broadside. Point your prow at whatever you are shooting at, never show any BB, even one with 14" guns, your side, because N Carolina armor is mediocre and she can be citadeled by anything from a Kongo on up.
